BfB The column written by the editor of the Boy From Brazil website Monday 11 June, 2001 Good Morning Mr JewellPaul Jewell has paid his penance and I for one wish him all the best in his new role as Wigan manager. Chris Hutchings, Jewell's Latics number two, also deserves some success after being derided by the mass media as a flop at City, getting scant credit for what he achieved during the five previous years. Indeed had Wigan chairman Dave Whelan made this call some two months ago when he let a team in the second division play offs fall into the hands of the mediocre Steve Bruce then PJ and Hutch could have been playing at VP again next season. Jewell had a tough time at Wednesday and really it was a wrong move for him. Wigan, although powered by Whelan's funds, are more Jewell's pitch. A club that trades on what it has, not what it had as they do in Sheffield. Jewell will have funds to spend, but not the amounts that seemed to scare him at City when expensive flops came and went. Bruno Rodriguez, Jorge Cadete et al should not be handled at the JJB Stadium. Jewell's talent, motivation of players not unlike himself as a player, underachievers perhaps, will come to the fore again. Jewell left Wigan as a player with a lot of potential that he failed to live up to as he meandered under the (mis)management of John Dochety at City. He can make sure that the current Wigan crop do not go the same way. And Hutchings, so hapless, so out of his depth, can rebuild his reputation as a good coach. Until we meet again, Jewell and Hutchings, all the very best of luck. |
